Why do I love Linux?

Updated: Jan 12

There are several compelling reasons why I prefer using a Linux operating system (OS) over others. Linux has proven to be an excellent choice, offering reliability, security, and cost-effectiveness.

1. **Cost-Free Accessibility**

Linux OS is completely free to use, eliminating both direct and indirect expenses. Unlike many proprietary operating systems, there are no licensing fees or hidden charges involved in using Linux.

2. **Security and Virus Resistance**

Linux is renowned for its secure environment. It is inherently resistant to viruses, which reduces the need for additional antivirus software. This feature alone saves time, money, and effort while providing peace of mind.

3. **Avoiding Costly Maintenance**

When I used Windows OS, I faced significant expenses for security measures and occasional re-installations, even while using antivirus software. Unfortunately, many people in India use pirated versions of Windows, which are more prone to virus attacks. In contrast, Linux provides regular updates and security patches at no cost, ensuring a secure and stable system.

4. **Free Applications and Regular Updates**

Most applications available for Linux are free to use and receive frequent updates from the developer community. This ecosystem of open-source tools is both cost-effective and efficient.

5. **Open Source Transparency**

Windows OS is proprietary, meaning its code is inaccessible to the public. Users cannot inspect or modify it, raising concerns about trust and flexibility. On the other hand, Linux is open source, allowing anyone to review, modify, and enhance its code. This transparency ensures constant improvements from expert developers worldwide who voluntarily contribute their expertise.

6. **Speed and Ease of Use**

Linux is generally faster and more efficient than Windows OS. Its performance is particularly noticeable on older hardware, where it can extend the life of aging systems. Once accustomed to Linux, many users find it difficult to return to Windows.

7. **Adoption by Organizations**

Many government and private organizations worldwide, including tech giants like Facebook, Google, and even Microsoft, rely on Linux for its reliability and security.

8. **Foundation of Android**

All Android phones run on Linux OS, showcasing its versatility and widespread usage in mobile technology.

9. **Diverse Options**

Linux offers a variety of distributions to suit different needs. Among the many options available, I consider Linux Mint and Ubuntu MATE to be the best. Currently, I use both on my system through a dual-boot setup, allowing me to enjoy the features of both distributions.

In conclusion, Linux OS is an excellent choice for those seeking a free, secure, and efficient operating system. Its open-source nature, combined with the support of a global community, makes it a superior alternative to proprietary systems. For me, Linux Mint and Ubuntu MATE have been game-changers, and I firmly believe that once you embrace Linux, you'll never look back.
